Soundproofing & Radiation Shielding

• Everyone knows that Lead is the most effective material for flashings but that is just the tip of the iceberg. It can be used for roofing, from simple to complex; for cladding to create a dramatic effect; for lining spaces as an aesthetic statement or for practical reasons such as soundproofing & radiation shielding.
• Lead is an ideal sound barrier because of its high density and acoustical limpness.
• Hollow partitions are generally more effective than solid ones of equivalent mass.
• Lead sheet is more effective when used on the outer skin of a hollow partition. The lead should make up at least half the mass.
• The high density of lead sheet allows considerable mass to be added to a panel skin, without materially increasing the thickness of the panel, or intruding into the cavity.
• The use of elastomeric or rubbery adhesives allows the lead to retain its acoustic limpness when bonded to other materials.
• Absorbent material (loose fill fibre glass or similar) in the cavity of a hollow partition increases the effectiveness at higher frequencies and marginally at lower frequencies.

• DLM Lead Sheet is manufactured to a +/- 5% thickness tolerance
• DLM Lead sheet can be supplied in any width from 150mm up to 1.2m in the thicknesses below in standard lengths of 3 and 6 metres
• Additional widths and thicknesses available on application

Health and Safety Precautions

Lead is a heavy metal and should be handled with care using best manual handling techniques to avoid injury. To ensure your well being DLM recommends that these guidelines be followed when working with lead.

• Do not breathe lead dust or fumes from heated lead
• Wear approved respiratory protection if ventilation is inadequate
• Do not eat or smoke when working with lead
• Where exposure to fumes or dust is significant, adequate protective clothing should be worn
• Wash thoroughly after handling lead especially before eating, drinking or smoking
• Gloves and safety boots should always be warn.
